Will Your Wishes Be Honored?
Weekly ArticleEveryone should have a will. A will is a relatively inexpensive way to ensure that your final wishes will be carried out and your assets will be distributed according to your directives. Here are some suggestions on how to create a will:

First, make a list of the people you would like to remember and provide for in your plans, such as children, siblings and other loved ones.

Second, identify those charitable organizations that are especially meaningful to you and that you would like to help by leaving a bequest. Make sure you have their correct names, addresses and tax identification numbers. This will avoid any confusion over similar sounding organizations.

Third, make a list of all of your assets and property. This includes your checking and savings accounts, CDs, stocks and bonds, retirement plans and life insurance policies. If you own real estate, make a note of what you think is its fair market value. You can leave your loved ones and favorite organizations a specific amount of money, specific percentage of your estate or even a specific asset.

Fourth, meet with a qualified professional advisor. This should include an attorney, but may also involve an accountant, financial planner, trust officer and others. Be sure to bring the items you have assembled from steps one, two and three above. This will save time, and consequently, money.

And finally, work with your advisors to prepare a plan that reflects your directions about how your estate should be divided. In most cases, the simplest way to accomplish your goals is by having a professionally prepared will. With this in place, you can have confidence that your wishes will be honored.
